Later today, it is expected that the Minister for Education, Norma Foley, will announce an inquiry into sexual abuse of children in schools run by religious orders.
The development comes in the wake of numerous allegations of sexual assault against former students of Blackrock College and other institutions run by the Spiritan (formerly Holy Ghost) congregation.
In November, RTÉ aired a documentary detailing the sexual assault of two brothers on Blackrock College Campus. Since then, the former Taoiseach, Michael Martin said that there would be a public inquiry into the matter.
It was reported by RTÉ that An Garda Síochána had received 131 contacts from victims, family members of victims and witnesses of abuse by mid-February of this year.
In November 2022, the Spiritan congregation apologised to the victims of sexual abuse.
