Introduction
The Government is committed to ensuring justice, acknowledgment and support for survivors of historical sexual abuse in schools.
As part of the ongoing efforts to address this dark chapter in our history, the Government has outlined key measures aimed at providing both immediate and long-term assistance to those impacted in the Programme for Government 2025.
Critical Legislation
The Government is on track to complete the passage of critical legislation that will provide essential supports for survivors of abuse in industrial schools and reformatories. This legislation will establish a comprehensive framework to ensure that survivors receive the care, recognition and reparations they deserve. The Government understands the importance of this legislation in delivering justice and healing to those whose lives were irrevocably changed by these traumatic experiences.
Commission of Investigation
In alignment with the findings and recommendations of the Scoping Inquiry led by Mary O'Toole SC, the Government has prioritised the establishment of a Commission of Investigation. This Commission will be tasked with investigating the scale and nature of historical abuse in institutions such as industrial schools and reformatories. The work of this Commission will be central to understanding the full extent of the abuse, while also ensuring that survivors' voices are heard, and their experiences are properly documented.
The Commission's work was approved by Cabinet in September 2024, and its establishment will be a key priority in the months ahead. Survivors of historical abuse have long called for such an investigation, and the Government is determined to provide them with the platform they deserve for healing and justice.
Government Support
This Government remains steadfast in its support for survivors of historical abuse. Recognising the profound impact these experiences have had on individuals and their families, the Government is committed to ensuring a compassionate and comprehensive response to their needs. The initiatives outlined above, along with the ongoing engagement with survivors, represent important steps in acknowledging past wrongs and addressing the ongoing trauma.
As we move forward, the Government will continue to collaborate closely with survivors, advocacy groups and other stakeholders to ensure that the measures implemented are meaningful, effective, and fully aligned with the wishes of those most affected.
Conclusion
The work of supporting survivors and bringing justice for historical abuses is a long-term commitment, and the Government is unwavering in its resolve to provide the necessary resources and attention to this important issue.
